Die us-amerikanische Domain-Verwaltung ICANN tagte vom 21.-26.6.09 in Sydney, um über neue Domain-Endungen zu beraten. Nachdem praktisch jedes Land mit seiner eigenen Domain-Endung versorgt ist (=ccTLDs, z.B. .de, .at, .es) und es auch schon 20 generische TLDs gibt (= gTLDs, z.B. .com, .biz, .edu, .asia), kommen nun immer mehr auf die Idee, für ihre spezielle Gruppe/ Marke/ Region eine eigene generische Domainendung zu beantragen.
